Machinima - Video Art in Virtual Worlds
Machinima (pronounced /məˈʃiːnɨmə/ or /məˈʃɪnɨmə/) is the use of real-time 3D graphics rendering engines to generate computer animation. The term also refers to video works that incorporate this animation technique.The following example is based on an interactive sculpture created in Second Life to honour Helen Keller Day.
Subcultures of Second Life
Over the years, SL has developed a lively set of subcultures. Here are just a few of them:
- Bloodlines (Vampires)Bloodlines is a vampire game based in Second Life, where users keep track of their conquests and rival houses vie for power.
- Furries A furry or "anthro" (short for anthropomorphism) is an avatar that has both human and animal qualities.
- GoreansApproximately 20,000 SL citizens who role-play within virtual recreations of worlds based on the Gor series of science-fiction novels written by John Norman.
- Steampunk Centred on the 44 islands (called "sims") of the prosperous and successful Victorian-era Independent State of Caledon, plus outlying colonies.
